01 — Define what needs to be seen
Watching an entrance and identifying a detail are different needs. Map areas, distances and obstacles. Choose the field of view around the actual scene, not only the megapixel count.

02 — Connect the image to the network
In an IP system, each camera sends data through the network to the recorder. PoE can carry data and power on one cable when the devices and power budget support it.

03 — Consider night-time and playback
Check backlighting, night lighting and reflections on site. Retention depends on streams, recording mode and disks; calculate it before purchase and verify it during commissioning.

04 — Hand over a controlled system
Separate administration and viewer accounts, set the clock and test an event search. Define authorized users and recorded areas before everyday use.
